The brief

The lightwell wall enclosing the basement entrance of a Hammersmith W6 house was bare, patchy and doing nothing for a space the owners walked past every day. They wanted it rendered and brought into the scheme of the house rather than left as a service yard.

The work

The wall was prepared and rendered, with vents set into the face and the rainwater downpipe and exterior light re-fixed over the finished surface rather than buried behind it. The render was then finished in a warm lime colour that works against the original yellow stock brick above and the painted timber door.

The result

A clean, warm-toned wall that makes the rear courtyard feel designed rather than left over — and reads as part of the house, not the back of it.
