The brief

A whole-house redecoration in London Colney AL2 where the owners wanted more than flat colour — a feature wall in the living room, textured wallcovering to the facing walls, and paper taken up the full height of the stairwell rather than stopping at a convenient line.

The work

Walls were filled, sanded and prepared before anything went on them, and the woodwork cut in by hand rather than taped. The living room was papered in a fine textured covering with a sage green feature wall set against it, and a striped paper hung in the bedroom. The stairwell was the difficult one — a vertical grasscloth-effect paper run top to bottom off a scaffold tower, with the pattern matched through every drop around the turns and under the handrail.

The result

Clean lines between wall and woodwork throughout, and a stairwell that reads as one continuous surface with no visible joins — the part of a decorating job that shows up immediately when it isn't done properly.
